Sick Visits

Q & A

What is a sick visit?

A sick visit is part and parcel of the pediatric services we offer at HG Pediatrics. If your child is feeling unwell or exhibiting symptoms of an illness, our team conducts a series of tests.

Common symptoms that warrant sick visits include:

  • Cold
  • Bronchitis
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Earache
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Cough
  • Asthma attack (mild or moderate)
  • Allergic reaction
  • Nausea or vomiting

When it comes to sick visits, we understand that time and urgency are of the essence. Therefore, we offer same-day availability and a short waiting time, allowing your child to get the necessary treatment as early as possible.

When should I bring my child for a sick visit?

Knowing which symptoms require urgent medical attention may not be easy. At HG Pediatrics, we recommend bringing your child in when you notice the following symptoms:

  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting lasting more than 24 hours
  • Sore throat with a fever or history of strep
  • Severe abdominal pain or pain lasting more than five days
  • Frequent or painful urination
  • Earache with fever or difficulty sleeping
  • Persistent cough or sinus drainage
  • Fevers lasting more than five days or reaching higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Any fever in children less than two months old

Furthermore, when you notice your child isn’t recovering well after an illness, you must bring him or her in for a sick visit. Other causes include headaches related to an injury accompanied by neck pain.

What happens during sick visits?

During a sick visit, the HG Pediatrics team assesses your child’s health by collecting height and weight, temperature, and other vital signs. They focus their assessment and diagnostic testing on your child’s symptoms.

During the visit, the team will examine your child for weight, temperature, and other vitals. The results will determine the next step, which may include:

  • Chest X-ray
  • Antibiotic treatment
  • Strep or flu testing
  • Blood or urine studies
  • Over-the-counter or prescription medications

The symptoms may prompt the team to recommend treatment plans such as a bland diet, oral hydration, rest, or nutritious foods. If needed, we may write a school excuse for your child and order a follow-up appointment in a few days or a week.

Is your child exhibiting any of the above symptoms? Do not hesitate, contact HG Pediatrics today.
