Well-Child Visit
Q & A
What is a well-child visit?
A well-child visit is a form of medical procedure performed as a routine regardless of your child being ill or not. At HG pediatrics, we begin well-child visits between 3 to 5 days after birth as a part of newborn care. During the process, our team will check your child’s overall health as well as other factors such as the following:
- Identify developmental issues
- Assess their mental and emotional health
- Give you a chance to express concerns
- Update vaccinations
- Detect early signs of illness
- Once old enough, give your child an opportunity to ask questions
- Educate you and your child
- Monitor growth and development
Well-child visits are critical as part of adolescent care. They provide a platform for teenagers to air out their issues, especially those they may be uncomfortable discussing with their parents. Our team will be with you and your child every step of the way.
One of the most significant advantages is that the teenager will get someone they can trust and respect to answer all personal health questions.
What happens during a well-child visit?
The examination during the visit is performed based on your child’s development needs. The team will perform the following procedures:
- Measures height and weight
- Records blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate
- Assesses vision and hearing
- Looks inside the ears, nose, and mouth
- Listens to the heart, lungs, and abdomen
- Tests reflexes, reactions, and motor skills
- Takes a sample of blood or urine, if needed
- Administers and updates vaccinations
How often does my child need a well-child visit?
Our well-child visits schedule is based on the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations. They are also in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.
We commence the schedule within 3 to 5 days after birth as part of newborn care. Afterward, the program is set as follows:
- Two weeks
- One month
- Two months
- Four months
- Six months
- Nine months
- 12 months
After your child’s first birthday, well-child visits take place at:
- 15 months
- 18 months
- Two years
- 30 months
- Three years
After four years all through adulthood, the team at HG pediatrics recommends annual well-child visits. For most parents, the visit’s preference is set right before the school year as most institutions require a physical medical examination.
If the present results areas of concern, then the team will recommend further treatment and evaluation for your child. The well-child visit goal is to ensure your child’s healthy development and detect early signs of serious conditions.
